• What does this thing do?
This is a web app for paraglider pilots who travel by foot or public transport and helps them identify flyable places they can reach in a given amount of time, a given willingness to walk and a given wind direction.
  • How does this thing work?
Go to the 'Search' tab, enter the name of the place where you want to start your journey (e.g. Bern) and use the sliders to specify 1) how long you want to be on public transport for, 2) how long you want to be walking, 3) how far you want to be walking, 4) how many meters of altitude you are willing to hike from the closest public transport stop. Then filter take-off sites by wind direction using the ticking boxes, and specify which types of locations you would like to be shown on the map (public transport stops, take-off sites, landing sites).
You will find the locations that match your criteria in the tab 'Your Results'.
  • Who's behind it?
My name is Maria Kliesch, a part-time paraglider pilot and hobby programmer. I have developed this app in my free time and for the use of everyone who finds it useful.

  • Where do the data come from?
The public transport data are based on the public transport API from search.ch and correspond to the SBB timetable 2021.
The list of take-off and landing sites was retrieved from paraglidingspots.com .
Walking distances were estimated using the Viadi Mobility Services.
Altitudes were retrieved from 'https://api3.geo.admin.ch/rest/services/height'map.geo.admin.ch provided by the Swiss Confederation.
  • How can I report a bug?
If something's not working or any of the estimated distances are inaccurate, please drop me a message on Linkedin.
